Digital Microscope Industry Application Guides
Advertisement

Digital microscope technology has changed the way images are created, displayed and processed. Three 16-page guides from KEYENCE describe successful applications in 6 industries using a problem/solution approach. Incorporating advancements unavailable with conventional microscopes, the new KEYENCE VHX-600 Digital Microscope is an all-in-one design. It provides benefits such as a high depth-of-field, 3D image composition, surface analysis with calibrated topographic displays, particle counting and on-screen measurements. New algorithms optimize illumination, image display and suppress glare.

An All-Digital Cantilever Controller for MRFM and Scanned Probe Microscopy Using a Combined DSP/FPGA Design
by Dick de Roover, La Moyne Porter II, Abbas Emami-Naeini, John A. Marohn, Seppe Kuehn, Sean Garner, and Doran D. Smith
An all-digital cantilever controller for magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) was developed through a close collaboration between SC Solutions (Sunnyvale, CA), Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (Adelphi, MD). The advantage of an all-digital controller is its absence of thermal drift as well as its great tuning flexibility. The versatile controller comprises a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) connected via a low-latency interface to an analog input, an analog output, and a digital signal processor (DSP) with additional analog outputs. Performance of the controller was demonstrated in experiments employing ultrasensitive silicon microcantilevers fabricated at Cornell University’s Nanoscale Science and Technology Facility.

ATR Imaging of Laminates
by Jerry Sellors
The use of polymer laminates is widespread, and their structure and composition vary greatly. Individual layer thickness can range from less than 4 µm to many tens of micrometers or more. Transmission infrared microscopy is an excellent tool for the study of these materials, and is widely employed. Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) imaging is a relatively new technique offering advantages over IR imaging methods, and is poised to become highly useful for laminates studies. For successful IR microscopy, it is necessary to cut the samples into thin sections (~10-µm thickness). This is not always straightforward, and maintaining integrity of the sample can be difficult. In addition, the presence of a sample of finite thickness in a highly converging IR beam can limit spatial resolution regardless of the hardware used.

The Simultaneous Class-Selective Extraction and Analysis of Beta-Blockers and Beta-Agonists Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymer SPE
by Christine Widstrand, Sanja Kronauer, Henrik Björk, Anna-Karin Wihlborg, and An Trinh
Beta-adrenergic blocking agents (beta-blockers) are a class of drugs used to treat various cardiac disorders such as hypertension, angina, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmia. Beta-2-adrenergic receptor agonists (beta-agonists) have been used clinically to treat asthma and other breathing disorders. However, because of key side effects associated with the drugs, they are heavily regulated by government agencies worldwide. Beta-blockers have been used as a performance enhancer among athletes by lowering heart rate and reducing tremor. Consequently, the International Olympic Committee has banned the use of beta-blockers.

  • Streamlining Drug Discovery: Use of High-Performance Computing to Speed Drug Discovery and Approval
    by Michael J. Colonna
For all of its complexities, high-performance computing (HPC) is not an abstract discipline obsessed with processing power for its own sake. Advancements in the field usually come from creative groups working on a specific problem space and using computers as a tool to reach a goal. Gencom (Irvine, CA) is a company leading the use of HPC to discover new drug therapies. Using a highly sophisticated cluster built on a foundation of 7000 Intel® Itanium® processors (Intel Corp., Santa Clara, CA) running Microsoft® WindowsTM (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA) Server Itanium Edition, Gencom is helping to transform the field of in silico drug discovery and applied genomics.
