| A High-Resolution Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry Platform for Breakthrough Discoveries in Life Science Research and the Pharmaceutical Industry |
by Alistair Wallace
In recent years, the combination of liquid chromatography and high-resolution exact mass tandem mass spectrometry has been widely adopted for a variety of research applications such as drug discovery and development; proteomics; and, more recently, biomarker discovery. From an analytical perspective, both the profiling and characterization of the typical samples encountered in this arena can be extremely challenging since they often contain thousands of components over a wide range of concentrations, and individual compounds of interest can carry numerous or complex modifications…

Centrifuge Rotor Material Evolution: Advances in Rotor
Design Using Composite Materials |
by Sheila Piramoon
Centrifuges are common and important tools for the laboratory. Choosing the right rotor system for each centrifuge can maximize the equipment's performance and longevity. In recent years, centrifuge rotor materials have progressed, and a wider range of options is now available. This rotor evolution gravitates toward lighter and stronger materials; rotor weight reduction increases ease of use, while stiffer rotors add strength and hold the structure together even under a rotor's maximum load. The materials used in centrifuge rotor design continue to evolve; today, new improvements are realized through the use of composite materials, such as carbon fiber…

New White Paper: HPLC & UHPLC users achieve 50%
more capacity with 10X less compliance risk |
As chromatography methodology evolved from LC to HPLC to UHPLC, the lab process bottleneck shifted from long analytical run times to CDS preparation tasks. Now, paper-based sample prep and sequence-set activities consume significant analysts' time. These paper-based tasks also contribute to compliance risks in cGxP environments. This paper reviews how labs can automate their HPLC/CDS preparation tasks using low-cost, workstation-based technologies and achieve higher capacity with significantly lower risk.

High Performance GPC Columns For Polymer
Applications Using Organic Solvents |
PLgel™ is a highly cross-linked, porous polystyrene/divinylbenzene matrix, which is recognized as a market leader in GPC column technology. Designed for organic GPC, PLgel offers high pore volume and high efficiency to maximize resolution. Unequalled solvent compatibility makes for easy transfer between polar and non-polar eluents and outstanding physical rigidity provides extended lifetimes reducing downtime.
PLgel can be used at temperatures up to 220 °C and operating temperatures up to 150 bar (2200 psi), and easily tolerates eluents in the pH range 1-14 with up to 10% water in a miscible organic solvent.
The comprehensive PLgel range covers virtually all organic solvent-based polymer application areas, and makes selection of the correct column, solvent and calibration standards fast and reliable.
Manufactured and packed exclusively by Varian since 1976, PLgel is manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 and benefits from comprehensive QC/QA for total reproducibility.

| New Technologies to Further Genomics in Clinical Research |
by Peer Staehler
Rapidly evolving technologies in genomic research and the accessibility of genomic data within recent years have significantly changed biomedical research. Identification of small noncoding RNAs and their implication in healthy and disease states, faster and less expensive sequencing technology, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) have paved the way for genomics from basic research into clinical diagnostics. Clinical genomics is the application of large-scale, high-throughput genomic technologies in clinical settings to gain a better understanding of healthy and disease states. Genomic evaluation and gene-based testing will expand diagnostics into early detection and predisposition, and help to predict the best possible therapy for patients…
