Fast Micro-GC Capabilities Based on a
Microintegration Technology Platform

by Harm van Weerden, Gert-Jan Burger, and Job Elders

Chromatography dates back to the early nineteenth century, when paper and cloth were used to spot-test dye mixtures and plant extracts. However, it was not until the mid-twentieth century that the first theoretical article on chromatography was published. Chromatography is determined by many different parameters including, but not limited to, column efficiency or theoretical plate number, retention time, temperature and temperature ramp, volumes and flow rates, dead volumes, injection profiles and widths, and detector specifications. This article focuses on the impact of the instrument hardware on the chromatography...

Mortar Grinder PULVERISETTE 2—Wide-Ranging Applications
AdvertImage2

In many laboratories, samples are still ground using a hand held pestle and mortar. Despite the fact that a better method has been available for many years: namely the Mortar Grinder PULVERISETTE 2. With this mill, the pestle is held against the wall of a rotating mortar bowl with adjustable, reproducible spring pressure. The grinding time is set with a digital timer. A scraper on the inside wall of the mortar bowl ensures that the sample is always re-directed towards the fixed pestle. The PULVERISETTE 2 grinds the sample through friction, which means that there is no thermal load on the material unlike a ball mill. The result is considerably more homogeneous and reproducible than grinding with a hand mortar also the mill is very easy to clean. The mortar bowl and pestle can be removed without tools in just two easy motions for quick cleaning.
Thanks to the gentle grinding, one of the main applications for this mill is in the pharmaceutical industry for galenics to confirm the quantity of active ingredients in drugs (tablets and dragées).

Quality Evaluation of HPLC-Grade Acetonitrile

by Shi-heng Liu

Acetonitrile is the most commonly used organic mobile phase component due to its unique properties that set it apart from the other LC solvents (midrange solvent strength, excellent solvent performance, generation of well-defined chromatographic peaks, and lower viscosity and lower UV cutoff compared to alcohols and ethers). Acetonitrile is typically a by-product of the large-scale production of acrylonitrile (from ammonia and propylene) and may contain a wide range of very low-level impurities, including acrylonitrile, a(ß)- methacrylonitrile, cis/trans butenenitrile, acetaldehyde, acetone, methanol, ethyl cyanide, acrolein, allyl alcohol, propenoic acid, oxazol, and acetic acid.Trace amounts of the above impurities may remain in HPLC acetonitrile even after a sophisticated purification process. Some of these trace impurities not only can lead to high baseline and ghost peaks, interfering with the qualification and quantification of analytes, but can also contaminate the column and block the system, resulting in malfunction of the instrument...
