| Digital Microscope Industry Application Guides |
 |
Digital microscope technology has changed the way images are created, processed and displayed. Three 16-page guides from KEYENCE describe applications in 6 industries using a problem/solution approach. Incorporating advancements, unavailable with conventional microscopes, the new KEYENCE VHX-600 Digital Microscope is an all-in-one design. It provides benefits such as a high depth-of-field, 3D image composition, surface analysis with calibrated topographic displays, particle counting and on-screen measurements. New algorithms optimize illumination, image display and suppress glare.

| What is "Hot" in Column Technologies for Liquid Chromatography? |
by Frantisek Svec
It has been just over 100 years since Russian botanist Mikhail Semionovich Tswett invented the separation technique that he named chromatography. This term combines two Greek words, χηρομα (chroma) and γραπηειν a (graphein), meaning literally "color writing or recording." Tswett defined his approach the following way: "A method which separates different components on an adsorptive column in a flow system is a chromatographic method." Unfortunately, his approach did not attract much attention and remained unnoticed for a long time. Despite some experimental work during the 1930s, the major thrust came only after World War II. The seminal works of Archer J.P. Martin and Robert Synge that launched the era of modern gas and liquid chromatography were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1952. The following developments then led to rapid acceptance of this separation method. Today, chromatography is the third most widely used analytical technique, surpassed only by weighing and pH measurement…

An Immunoaffinity Capillary Electrophoresis Biomarker
Analyzer for Use in Toxicoproteomics Research |
by Norberto A. Guzman
The slow pace of discovery of new protein biomarkers of toxicity or "toxicity signature protein/peptides" is partially due to the lack of high-throughput and high-sensitivity biomarker devices. Traditional proteomics platforms have been very useful, but there is a general consensus among scientists that significant improvements are needed to further our research into the understanding of injurious agents and how they affect biological systems during toxicity and disease. Some of the drawbacks of individual technologies have prompted investigators to use complementary multiple proteomics platforms that can bring more data to bear upon toxicological problems…

| Making Single-Molecule Sequencing a Reality |
| by Avak Kahvejian and Steve Kellett
The quest to directly sequence individual strands of DNA has challenged genomic technologists for decades. All traditional and "next-generation" sequencing technologies require DNA samples to be amplified numerous times to make many copies of the original molecules, which, only then, can be detected and sequenced. Eliminating these copying steps for genetic analysis would not only reduce the costs and complexity of sample preparation, but would also avoid the errors and biases inherent in the amplification and image analysis process, producing data more closely reflective of the actual biology under study…

| High-Throughput Cell Cycle Analysis Using a Microplate Cytometer |
| by Paul Wylie
The traditional method of determining the cell cycle phase of individual cells is by quantifying their total DNA content using flow cytometry. For screening purposes, however, flow cytometry has several shortcomings, most notably, low throughput, the requirement for a large number of cells, and the inability to analyze adherent cell lines in situ…

| Detecting the Future of Bioscience |
| by Gabriella Armin
The potential to use antibodies as research tools has been known since the early 1890s, when Karl Landsteiner used antibodies to distinguish between the ortho and meta configurations of groups on benzene rings. Concurrently, Emil von Behring and Shibasaburo Kitasato demonstrated antibody-mediated immunity against diphtheria and tetanus toxins, culminating in Paul Ehrlich's proposal that antibodies could be used as "magic bullets" to target and defeat human diseases…
